IP MAN: KUNG FU MASTER Review
Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest entry chronicling the life of Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man who supervised the Kung Fu teaching of Bruce Lee. Directed by up and coming Liming Li, who is currently directing a prequel called Young Ip Man Crisis time. The film was also written by Liming Li and Qingshui Shi.
The movie is set at an earlier part of Ip Man’s life when he was a police captain in Foshan, and on his way to becoming a great Wing Chun teacher. In this version of his life story he tries to stop a Chinese criminal gang only to be led into attempting to stop an evil hostile Japanese agent who is seeking to pave a way for the oncoming invasion by introducing hard drugs into the community.
Torn between his duties as a police officer and his responsibilities as a martial artist committed to the Foshan community, Ip fights firstly the Chinese criminal gang lead by the daughter of the gang leader who has been murder presumably by Ip, and eventually the Japanese agent and his murderous entourage.
The Kung Fu choreography, is fantastic and the attention to Wing Chun detail is terrific. There is a little unnecessary wire work, but it serves to reinforce the dynamic action. Dennis To plays the role with charisma and honour, he is staking his claim as a great martial arts action star.
He moves with precision, fights with a smile, and has range enough to show loving care for his family. As Ip Man, To brings honour to the role and as he has appeared in Ip Man, Ip Man 2 and as the star of The Legend is Born:- Ip Man and Kung Fu League, this comes with no surprises.
Dennis works best in those moments of combat when his feet and hands demonstrate ultimate chi power, especially his exhibition of using the Wing Chun pole technique is awesome. The introduction of his Wing Chun uncle is great and entertaining very much like the Martial Arts master’s Jackie Chan had in Snake in the Eagles Shadow and Drunken Master. If you enjoy great old school martial arts movies, this is up there with the best. And if you enjoy movies about the legend of Ip Man, you’re in for a treat.
