SYNOPSIS: Mike Markovich, a young stockbroker at a Mob-controlled Wall Street firm, is betrayed and imprisoned for six years. When he is released, his deadly quest for vengeance begins.
What Is It?
PAYBACK is a cool, intense, cinematic, 80/ 90s set revenge movie that opens in a junk, smuck stock Wall Street, and spirals into gritty Serpico meets The Irishman. A cautionary tale perhaps, with revenge as a motivating theme throughout, “Once it starts, you can’t stop.”
We Rate It;
GREAT STORY, GOOD CINEMA, WATCH IT.
We asked Director Joe Mensch;
- How did you choose this story as your directorial debut ?
- You chose Matt Levett, an Australian, to play a Russian speaking Ukrainian New Yorker, yes, he’s an actor yet, how did you help him to pull it off? Is he the next Mel Gibson?
- It has a great sense of unwinding inevitability, as in the line, “Once it starts, you can’t stop.” Is it a moral tale, with a touch of karma for Mike, starting out selling junk stock and sliding deeper, …. is it a cautionary tale?
- Did you have any problems with the cast learning Russian?
- Where you able to apply some of your experiences with Martin Scorsese and Joel Silver to your movie?
- What were your movie influences for such an atmospheric production?
- Does being a producer help you as a director?
- How do you create the action scenes, are you involved with the stunts and fight choreography?
