GAUCHO Life Argentina

GAUCHO Life Argentina

We were privileged to get a glimpse inside one of the world’s toughest lifestyles in Argentina when we met a GAUCHO. Found in S America, they are similar to the cowboy and are regularly described as, “rugged, reliable, resilient, resourceful and righteous,” and, “tough, hardy and able.”

These ideals, arguably, are valued by the martial arts world. We were in Concordia, Entre Rios, Argentina for the World Martial Kombat Federation (WMKF) Championship and felt it was essential to experience some of these legendary folk and their lifestyle.

So our host Matias Molinari drove us out in to the back country to meet the gaucho Miguel Wendler and the farmer Andres Blumaghen. Many thanks to Aldo Blumaghen, Mario Meyer Bourren, Oscar Ramon Acuña and the great people of Concordia, Entre Rios, Argentina. Muchas gracias amigos y Argentina.

Three generations of the Blumaghen farming family

Little did we know that this trip would include the challenge of riding a gaucho horse, helping round up the sheep, and lassooing those animals that needed a health check.

No instructions, just get on with it… you’ll see how I did… remember Horse Stance… well there’s a lot of that…

The horses were liked tuned rally cars, 0 to whatever in no time, with instant braking, tiny turning circle, and all controlled from a saddle made from a couple of sheep skins, foam and a wooden pack frame.

Lassooing the sheep was a different skill, luckily I had practiced on reindeer in N Sweden many years before.

All in all it was a superb day, with a deep end introduction to some key Gaucho skills. I’d love to go back for longer.
